Volcom Clothing

Volcom initially began as an idea shared between two amateur snowboarding mates; Richard Woolcott and Tucker who, after routine Tahoe trip to visit two friends, discovered the real joy of 'riding powder' unblemished snow which was soon to become more than just a holiday past time. They talked about setting up their own clothing company and as the idea grew, they soon found themselves setting up a riding company based around the three sports that they enjoyed. With a $5000 loan from Richard's dad, it wasn't long before 'Volcom' was officially born.

The leading principles of Volcom have stayed the same as when the concept first came to light; this is a brand that prided itself on a major philosophy of the times: "youth against establishment", bringing with it a mixture of vibrancy and rebellion, a freshness and originality. The two young founders in fact knew very little about running a business, reflected perhaps by the fact that their official headquarters were based in Woolcott's bedroom but that didn't matter; this was always going to be about "spirit and creativity".

And so Volcom grew and has continued to grow; these days their head quarters are a little more sophisticated as is the brand as a whole, with a series of featured riders to carry the name across a series of skating, surfing and snowboarding events worldwide.

The range itself is perhaps a little less 'radical' than you might expect, but by no means sacrifices any of its originality. The men's clothing range covers a spectrum of tops, trousers, jeans, board-shorts, t-shirts, fleeces, sweaters, jackets and 'Creedlers' which is a type of footwear to you and me.

The predominant use of natural materials (100% cotton in most cases) makes the range ideal for the active wearer as they offer a light weight and flexible look that ensures the wearer is cool when they need to be, or warm should they find themselves in cooler climates.

The choice in fabric patterns is perhaps where the brand really comes into own with a series of almost geometric and asymmetrical designs and shapes being amongst the norm. Many of the products are given individual names; inspiration from those riders and 'legends' that continue to inspire Volcom and wear the products with pride. Jamie Lynn has been associated with Volcom from very early on and his experiences and accolades in the snowboarding world have made him an obvious bearer of the torch. He lends his name to the 'Jamie Lynn' FA Slim T-shirt which features his own artwork, a screen-print design which is available in a variety of colours and from sizes 'S' to 'XXL'.

The range of men's board shorts again reflects the almost 'unpredictable' choice in prints, making each one seem vibrant and unique whilst retaining a sense of fun and style. The use of zip fly's and drawstrings ensure that these products are also designed with their sports in mind making them as practical as they are comfortable.

The Volcom Creedlers for both men and women similarly value practicality; for example, the men's 'Pistol Cluster Creedler' mixes a leather insole and straps for watertight durability, with a rubber outsole for added grip. Marked with the 'Volcom' signature, they make for great eye-catching beach footwear.

The range in women's clothing is just as considered and again, explores the use of vibrant colours with natural fabrics and designs and styles that are in keeping with the sports on a practical level and fashion on an aesthetic one.

In addition to the large variety of tops, jeans, fleeces, shorts and swimwear, the Volcom girls clothing includes an array of feminine skirts and dresses which can work just as well as part of an active lifestyle or as an alternative for those days off. There is a great sense of versatility about many of these particular items such as the 'Roses are Rad' dress which could look just as good for a day out on the beach as it would a night out on the town and again, the range in colours and use of natural fibres make these lightweight items ideal for packing into a suitcase.

The Volcom brand covers a number of accessories on both the men's and women's ranges including hats for both warm and cold climates, underwear, socks, belts and wallets, luggage and now the range even includes a series of 'miscellaneous' extras that might come in handy on those trips to the slopes or to the coast such as umbrellas, scarves, towels, key-chains, compasses, lanyards, ties and even a folding chair! These items are perhaps testament to the experiences of seasoned sports men and women.
