DC Shoes

The history of the DC brand must surely be one of the most remarkable tales of triumph over adversity. Not just in how the brand has grown successfully on an international level, but right from the very beginning when its founders, Ken Block and Damon Way were still strangers, each of them struggling to conform to the career paths that they had originally intended.

Where Ken Block abandoned his budding career as an architect to pursue a less conventional (but more enjoyable) lifestyle in snowboarding, his choices weren't without their obstacles. However it was only when faced with the concept of his voluntary poverty that he began to tap into his creative skills and took advantage of his college facilities to screen print photographs of his snowboarding mates onto T-Shirts to sell in a local store. He pursued this part-time design career, as well as taking a 'regular job' in the shop that began to sell his designs, until a chance meeting with Damon Way in 1991.

Like Ken, Damon had aspirations of the sporting world, but his dreams were quashed after a school fight resulted in a sudden brain haemorrhage, quashing any dreams he had of being a professional skateboarder. Coupled with his father's mysterious death, it is fair to say that the future didn't look so bright for this nineteen year old young man. It was when Damon took up snowboarding to aid his mental and physical recovery that he first walked into the shop Ken was working in, and then a second chance meeting in the same commercial art class at college that this awkward couple would come together and soon form 'Eightball Clothing', the predecessor of what was eventually to become known as DC Shoes or 'Droors Clothing Shoes' to give it's full title.

Their amalgamated interests in skateboarding and snowboarding have certainly paved a way into the footwear market of these genres, and continue to succeed in making stylish and ergonomic footwear specifically with these sports in mind. Collaborating with a certified orthopaedic technician, DC shoes have ensured that they provide the ultimate range in performance shoes incorporating rubber and lace loops to protect skaters from their ever-fraying laces. Having thrived year after year, Ken and Damon can now boast of a company that has branched into women and children's footwear, accessories and luggage and has 'teams' in snow, surf and motor-cross sports with a series of riders representing each one helping to spread the DC profile and prove that the company remains loyal to footwear that does more than look good.

The current range of footwear is vast in choice and style, all of the products offering comfort and a casual but somehow 'urban' style. Every product has an immense amount of detail poured into it, including the strong and catchy names that every individual pair is given. For example, the men's 'Command' shoes might imply a sense of power and strength, and a quick look at the details proves this to be the case. Made from resilient but soft leather and with an abrasion-resistant toe cap, but also featuring a foam padded tongue and collar for added support, a 'performalite' insole with heel airbag to provide cushioning and shock resistance and a multi-tone, abrasion resistant sticky rubber bottom for enhanced board control. This is footwear with conviction, and they look good too!

Styles can adapt to an outfit for most casual occasions, so ultimately offer the wearer great value for money. For that slightly different look for example, the 'Era' men's shoe offers a little more in aesthetic luxury. Made from heavy duty suede of pigskin suede toe cap and upper to give that added durability, the dark and light chocolate variety of this shoe looks particularly impressive (though also available in white/navy and black/white). They also boast metal eyelets for better airflow and a soft tricot lining amongst their other attributes, proving once again that DC have a considered range of footwear to choose from.

The women's and children's ranges are just as sophisticated in their numerous features and options; the women's 'Striker' shoe is available in three great colours; white/emerald, white/blue and white/pink and again, prove that DC can combine ergonomics with aesthetics. It seems rare that a company would put so much effort into matching the choice in women's shoes as men's, but the proof is in the pudding as they say; this is a brand that anyone and everyone can enjoy.

All the DC footwear proudly wears the stylish 'DC' logo, a recognizable badge of honour and this has even been extended to the apparel DC clothing range which includes a casual but comfortable variety of men's, women's and kids' jackets, sweaters, shirts, knits, fleeces, trousers and T-shirts.
