A quick browse through what Volcom Ladies clothing has to offer and it's hard to imagine that it all began with two young men who changed their lives to follow their passion for snowboarding.

Perhaps Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall always knew they were destined to do something different, after all, they had talked about starting up a clothing company on a monumental trip to Tahoe but then most of us would probably admit to having dreams of doing something different with our lives and then never biting the bullet. A few weeks after their snowboarding trip, however, the two extreme sports enthusiasts came up with the idea of starting a riding company based around the three sports they enjoyed most - surfing, skating and snowboarding. A $5000 loan from Woolcotts's dad and Volcom was born.

Volcom was founded in 1991 at a time of political and economic uncertainty; the US was in recession and faced riots in LA and George Bush Senior was making his mark against a certain Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War. It made sense then that Woolcott and Tucker ensured that Volcom offered some sort of relief to all that tension and remembered what it really meant to nurture young talent. They worked with the philosophy of "Youth against establishment" and aimed to support young creative thinking by setting up what was to become a global community that relished board sports, music, art, and fashion.

Tradition stated that it was the boys who were the predominant skaters and surfers, and perhaps with two male founders it made sense that Woolcott and Hall would branch out into male clothing first of all. Board-shorts, jeans and tee-shirts remain the staple attraction to the brand's clothing range but inevitably Volcom has spread its wings and now offers tops, fleeces, sweaters and jackets, headwear, underwear, footwear and a number of accessories.

Whether it was a changing interest in female fashions or a shift in culture that meant more and more women began to see the appeal of these more extreme sports, Volcom soon embraced the ever growing market and now has a series of catalogues for its female fans.

One of the key factors in the success of Volcom's ladies' range is that the brand is also a supporter of female riders in those sports that it originally took its inspiration from. Claire Bevilacqua, Elena Hight, and Lin-z Adams Hawkins - stars of the surf, snow and skating worlds retrospectively. The sense of inclusion of such budding female stars emphasis the fact that Volcom prides itself on its sense of community, and whilst there is a versatility to their ranges, there is also a proven functionality too.

Fans of the Volcom ladies' range will note that girls who enjoy more extreme sports don't have to fit the stereotypical tom-boy image, in fact, a quick look at some of the offerings in the Spring and Summer ranges and you'll find an eclectic mix of femininity, practicality and style. Summer dresses, cami tops and tank tops all make for essential Summer sunshine wear; whereas the fleeces and hoodies make up those essential layers for the more unforgiving temperatures found at the snow slopes.

The range of denim wear for ladies is a great example of how much there is on offer. The Summer 2009 range in particular includes the brilliantly titled "Heartbreaker 3 Shorts", and the "Firebird 2 Matchstick jean" - both of which demonstrate the attention given to retaining a feminine edge to practical and comfortable clothing. With Skinny jeans, boot cut jeans and straight leg jeans on offer, the basic denim staples are covered, but the 'boyfriend fit' and stylish denim dresses are a nod to the more cutting edge fashion conscious fans.

To make it that bit easier to find the types of clothing required for those various active sports, the Volcom website has taken the initiative to separate the snow catalogue from the Summer version. Not only does this make it easier for snow fans to find what they need much quicker (and have an all-year round access to the clothing and accessories they'll need for those colder climates), but it makes sense to allow more room to offer that little bit of extra harsh-terrain expertise.

Snowboarders will find the Insulated Pants and jacket ranges vital for those winter sports, but there is much to offer in the way of styles too. The Lexington Pant demonstrates the knowledge and science applied to ensuring that the girls are all set for a successful snowboarding trip - with a 'V-Science breathable lining', 'mesh lined inseam vents', and 'hand warmer pockets' to name just a few attributes.
