From the first days of the Van Doren Rubber Company, the Vans Authentic shoe or pattern number 44 as they were then known, have been at the heart of the Vans footwear line-up. Back then, Van Doren was unique in that they sold direct to the customer and as such, could offer custom made shoes for customers who could afford it. They could make the uppers from material supplied by the customer if it was requested. Cheerleaders and schools even requested footwear to match their uniforms. In the 1970's Vans became the footwear of choice for a generation of Californian skateboarders. In a stroke of marketing genius, Van Doren were quick to sponsor the new pro-skater Stacy Peralta to wear their shoes.
As Peralta travelled all over the world to take part in skating competitions, so the brand gained recognition. With photos of Peralta wearing Vans appearing in popular skate magazines, kids everywhere soon wanted a pair of Vans for themselves. From Gothic grape to Authentic orange (covered in orange slice fruit print), the Vans Authentic shoe has stayed absolutely true to its origins. The design is unchanged since it was first produced in 1966. Now a true classic for any number of occasions, the Authentic is loved by all ages. Vans Authentic shoes were the very first lace-up skate shoes to feature what is now Vans' signature waffle sole construction. The vulcanized sole and simple canvas uppers were all that was required to make these shoes a hit. The Authentic is now available in a truly staggering range of colours and styles.
The legacy of the Vans Authentic shoe lives on. From Zac Efron to Kanye West, Vans Authentic shoes are still the shoes to be seen in. Vans themselves reckon this pattern in particular has remained consistent throughout all the ups and downs of the last forty odd years. The Vans Authentic shoe with its no-frills, basic low-top design continues to be a firm favourite with skaters, kids and celebrities alike.
